Fall Fashion That Works: Five Tips

Fall has arrived in Toronto, bringing crisp mornings, colourful leaves and pumpkins appearing on doorsteps around the city. One of the best parts of the season, in our opinion, is fall fashion. Who doesn’t love a great sweater, fabulous boots, spectacular scarves and more?

When you’re a mom, fashion needs to be functional, no matter the season. The best looks this fall will take you from daycare drop-off to an office meeting to the playground, and then (dare to dream!) out for a date or coffee with a friend. We have five tips to help you piece together fall fashion that works for you and keeps you looking your best.

Five Tips for Fall Fashion that Works

1. Embrace Colour

This past spring and summer were all about bright colours, and that trend is continuing into the fall. Look for emerald greens, rich plums, electric blues and red hues. The trend towards interesting patterns we saw in the spring is also continuing this season. For fun fall fashion that works, invest in a few pieces to give your look interest. A fun shirt, a bright scarf, or a great bag can add visual interest to your look and add variety to your wardrobe without breaking the bank.

2. It’s All About the Layers

At this time of year the temperature can change a lot from day to day, and sometimes from hour to hour. Just like your mom told you, the best way to handle this is to layer up. Think light jackets, blazers, sweaters and scarves, which you can add and remove as needed. You may be tempted to size up for roominess, but resist the urge. Pieces that actually fit you make for much more flattering fall fashion. Interesting outerwear is hot this this season, with different colours and textures, including faux fur, leather, and details like eye-catching buttons.

3. Choose a Great Pant

Most moms live in pants, so choosing a great pair gives you a great fall fashion foundation to build from. Skinny jeans are still hot when it comes to fall fashion. Many moms shy away from them because of the word skinny, but they’re surprisingly flattering. Plus, their stretch makes it easy to keep up with your kids. If that’s not for you, the boyfriend jean is also popping up everywhere this fall. For a more formal look, go for slouchy trousers that skim your ankles.

4. Boots, Boots, Boots

Nothing beats a great boot. These aren’t only fashionable, either, they’re immensely practical. A good boot will keep your feet warm and dry, while pulling your outfit together. Browns are especially popular this fall, and you’ll find lots of playground-friendly styles in stores. Worn over skinny jeans or with a skirt they’re practical, comfortable and polished. Of course, a great rain boot is a must on a rainy autumn day, as well. Leather is fabulous, but when you visit the pumpkin patch or go out looking at fall colours, you’ll want something that can withstand a little mud.

5. Top it All Off

Hats keep your head warm and dry, and add a lot of visual interest to your look. This fall they’re also popping up everywhere. Floppy knits, fedoras, toques – the world’s your oyster. Feel free to play a little. Investing in a few great hats is a fun way to update your look without breaking the bank. Like most accessories, hats are generally cheaper than other pieces, and they’re also easier to fit.

To fall fashion!
