It used to be that sewing was a skill passed down from one generation to the next. That’s not so much the case anymore. It seems like a large part of a generation, for a variety of reasons, missed out on learning this skill. Many of us picked it up briefly in school through home ec classes, but even those are becoming less common these days. That means it’s rarer for kids to pick up the skill. I think it’s for that reason that young girls have been drawn to Sew Be It, a sewing studio located in the Yonge and Lawrence area.
A Sewing Studio for All Ages and Abilities
From ages 6 to 96, whether you’re experienced or never heard of a bobbin, there are sewing classes and workshops to meet every age and skill level. The brilliant thing about classes at Sew Be It sewing studio is that they are broken down into narrow age ranges: pre-tweens (ages 6 and 7), tweens (ages 8 to 11), teens (ages 12 to 16) and adults. And each age range is further divided into skill levels. During each session, students work toward completing one project that is chosen with the help of the instructor, based on skill level. The same approach applies for their summer and March Break camps.
The key to the sewing studio’s success is its staff, who all have degrees in fashion and fashion industry experience. They offer students valuable support all in a relaxed and creative environment.
Sewing for Adults
Classes for adults have as much variety as those for kids. There are straight-up sewing classes at all levels; Fashion School Application, for those who could use some guidance in preparing a portfolio; Specialty Sewing such as swimwear, lingerie and baby clothes; and Fashion Entrepreneurship for those who want to go into business. And if you’re keen to take a class with a friend or your daughter (hint, hint: Mother’s Day is approaching), you can create a customized class just for the two of you.
Shiny New Location and Brand New Classes
As of April 27, 2013, the Sew Be It sewing studio will be moving down the street to their brand new location, just a few doors down on Yonge Street. The spacious new location will house the studio space right on the main floor and promises to be an inviting environment to create. New to the roster of services are classes for pre-tweens (ages 6 and 7), sewing birthday parties, high school fashion shows and drop-in classes. Check out their website to see the full array of classes and workshops available.
