what to do in toronto the exThousands of people will flock to Exhibition Place today for the opening of the Canadian National Exhibition. The CNE is a time honoured tradition for famillies around the GTA and beyond. Over 1.3 million visitors took in the CNE last year and this year hopes to be bigger and better. So, if you are wondering what to do in Toronto that is exciting, adventurous, educational and fun for the entire family, head to the Ex. We’ve put together a round up of the best family friendly things to do at the Ex this year.

What to do in Toronto: The Ex

Kids’ World Stage – Over the next 2 weeks the place to be to see the best children’s entertainers is the CNE’s Kid’s World Stage. Every day kids can watch performers take the stage. The To Be Determined Theatre will present Love You Forever…and More Munsch – a performance that weaves many of your favourite Robert Munsch stories into one piece. The stage will be rockin’ when 2012 and 2013 Canadian Children’s Music Group of the Year winners, Splash ‘N Boots take the stage daily. If your little ones are fans of My Little Pony, Dora or Mike the Knight – be sure to check out their daily special sing along adventures.

The Farm – You might not expect to see cows, sheep and farmers in the heart of the city….but that’s exactly what you will find inside the Better Living Centre. The Farm is a family favourite. Kids can discover what it takes to be a farm hand in the AgVenture interactive zone. Check out the amazing butter sculptures, get lost in the corn maze or try your hand at fishing. The Farm is a space not to be missed by kids of all ages.

the exThe Kiddie Midway – The little ones won’t feel left out of the excitement as they enjoy the special ride area designed specially for little kids. The Kiddie Midway features 30 rides that will trill and entertain the younger set. Rides include; Bumble Bee Ride, Dizzy Dragon, Lollipop Swing and Wacky Worm Coaster.

Get Musical – The Ex is a great place for kids to not only take in some music, but they can make their own music too. Take a stroll down Kids Street and try out the collection of musical instruments. Back again this year is the super popular iPad Zone, featuring the latest music apps.

Animals Everywhere – Aside from the animals kids will find in The Farm there are plenty of opportunities to have fun with our four legged friends. Families must be sure to take in a Super Dogs show…those dogs are awesome. If your kids prefer winged creatures, check out the Birds of Prey demonstrations in Kids’ World Park. For something a little creepier, learn about various reptiles at Reptilia.

This list is really is only the beginning of what kids will love at this year’s CNE. There really is so much to see. Don’t forget to check out the daily Mardi Gras Parade, the incredible acrobat shows, the unbelievable Food Building and so much more. A few tips for mom and dad; don’t forget the sunblock, bring along some water and you can always find a quiet patch of grass to get out of the hustle and bustle, so bring along a picnic blanket.

In my "previous life" I was a mental health professional...in my current life I'm a stay-at-home mom with 2 beautifully adventurous kids. I share everything that lands on my kitchen counter over on my blog, Kitchen Counter Chronicles. Swing by and learn how we are greening their lives; what we are crafting; what we are cooking and what we are reading. While you will often find the girls and I inside the kitchen, you will also find us out and about getting our hands dirty, exploring and learning outdoors.
