5 top plant-based food trends and where to eat them in Toronto

These days it seems families are focusing more on meatless Mondays and less on food with animal-derived ingredients in order to lead healthier, plant-based lifestyles. Personally I love to see what’s cooking in the plant-based world and there’s no shortage of where to find new and exciting food in Toronto. Here are five trends to follow and the places you can find them in the city.

Artisan Cheese: Long gone are the days of putting this delicious sandwich topper on the sidelines. Gourmet vegan cheese, mostly made from nuts or soy protein is the latest in vegan food with many must-try brands such as Miyoko’s Creamery. Tons of recipes are available online and if you’re looking to try something local, check out Zengarry or Tori’s Bakeshop.

Salad Bowls: This nutritious and delicious meal option can be made with almost anything you have in your pantry or fridge. You can start with quinoa, rice, or noodles as the base and fill it with lots of vegan goodness like sweet potato, spinach, beans, corn, onions, tomato, and the all time favourite—avocado.  Be sure to try Fresh Restaurants, Green Zebra Kitchen, or Fix + Co. if you’re looking of something fast and fresh in the city.

Smoothie Bowls: It’s safe to say that most, if not all foodies have had a smoothie in their lifetime—but have you had it in a bowl? Make your vegan smoothie a more complete meal by adding a few ingredients such as granola, almonds, chia, hemp, or flax seeds, coconut flakes, nut butter, and whatever else your heart desires. Grab one next time you’re downtown at CJ’s Organic Juices and Smoothies.

Vegan Ice Cream: Vegan ice-cream is one of this summer’s most popular DIY foods using frozen bananas, coconut milk, cashews, and maple syrup, or virtually any fruit and vegetable you can dream of. Drop by Pleasantville Creamery or Cosmic Treats to try their scrumptiously creamy delights this summer.

Vegan Bacon: You might think it’s strange, but I promise you vegan bacon is delicious! Made from nutritious foods like carrots, tempeh, eggplant, or coconut flakes, this latest vegan obsession is a blessing to those committed to the vegan lifestyle, but who are constantly thinking about crispy, greasy goodness. Visit YamChops to try the delicious bacon bits made out of coconut!
