Here’s a Toronto Mom you should definitely follow! She is an artist and mom to two gorgeous twins. She is the artist/owner behind Wild Canary Studio.
She grew up in Aurora and later attended and graduated from NSCADU (Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University) in Halifax. After returning from school, she worked as a Designer/Art Director for over 10 years in Toronto.
Fast forward a few years, she and her husband, Jeff moved to Leslieville and welcomed twin boys, Jake and Carson who are now almost 4.
We asked her a few questions about her life as an artist, entrepreneur and mom.
Tell us about Wild Canary Studio
Wild Canary Studio is a small business where I make and sells original cute and quirky watercolours, prints, pet portraits, greeting cards and temporary tattoos. It’s my mission to create fun products with personality and sentiment.
I hope to capture humour and fun amid the randomness of my playful creations and add a little happy to people’s walls and lives.
How long have you been running Wild Canary and how did you start?
Being a mama of twins has been a wild ride that has kept me quite busy, but while at home with my boys, I was feeling the itch to be creative again. When the boys napped one day, I picked up a paint brush and played around with watercolours. I shared my paintings with friends and family, who then encouraged me to start up a shop. Wild Canary Studio was born and is now almost 2 years old.
How do you manage to run a business and raise your young twins?
I don’t? Hahaha, in all honesty, it’s tough. The first year when Wild Canary started to take off (pun intended. P.S. I love puns), our boys were home with me full time. I worked while they napped, in the evenings and I relied on help from my mom, mother-in-law and babysitters to help care for the boys, so I could paint. Now they are in full-time daycare, so I’m able to work during the day … but between keeping up with the house and family stuff, work still overflows into the evenings and weekends.
For treats: Lazy Daisy
My boys love cookies and ice cream. We are big fans of staying local, so hitting up Lazy daisy for cookies, coffee (parenting fuel) and the train set is our fave. In the summer, Brett’s ice cream is where you will find us! They have some fun and different flavours that keep us coming back for more… and they are super close to woodbine park and the beach!
Outdoor fun: Beach time!
We are super fortunate to live close to the beach. We love to stroll along the boardwalk, throw rocks in the water, dig in the sand and hit up all the parks along the way.
Indoor activity: Cooper Koo YMCA
We spend at least one day a week at Cooper Koo YMCA. We love the facility, staff and the community we have built there. The family gym time on the weekends is great, when the weather is not!
